Vintage Pyrex Silex Double Bubble Vacuum Coffee Maker UW-8 w/ Original Booklet
Vintage Pyrex Silex Double Bubble Vacuum Coffee Maker UW-8 w/ Original Booklet
$90.00
A titan in the glass-making world, Pyrex has continued to innovate and blow away its customers with high-quality kitchenware. Named the "Silex," this double-bubble design oozes 1940's character. The unique seal between the top and the bottom creates a vacuum that pulls the water from the top chamber into the bottom through the coffee grounds. Missing the original rubber lid that would help create that air-tight seal, this piece makes for a better display model than functional coffee maker. This set does include the original instructional booklet, although it has separated into two pieces.
Coffee and coffee making have always been special to me. The deep, robust smell, the sharp jolt of energy that gives the day promise, and the warmth held closely between my hands creates a sensory overload that I crave when I fall asleep. These unique coffee makers inspire me too. I love that an artist and designer who sees something as archaic as making coffee, decides they can do it better. And to his or her credit, I've never seen a vacuum-creating mechanism like this since. There's a delicate-ness to the ceramic filter and flowery decoration on the bottom piece that's complimented by the (seemingly) handblown glass bowls. While you can't ask your grocer to grind your coffee for your Silex, as the instruction booklet suggests, you can admire this piece and the history it carries within.
